Freedom of speech does not exist to protect what is comfortable or agreeable. It exists to protect what is challenging, unpopular, and unsettling. The value of free expression is not measured by how it makes us feel, but by our willingness to tolerate ideas we oppose without silencing them. Disagreement is not harm, offense is not violence, and discomfort is not a justification for censorship. The moment speech is filtered through approval or emotion, freedom becomes conditional, and conditional freedom is no freedom at all. A society that defends speech only when it aligns with its beliefs has already surrendered the principle it claims to uphold.
